A Compromise for Adventure
Jones was a bit disheartened, but understanding, when Bennett, not long after his 45th birthday, told him that he had a desire to retire from data-gathering trips and take up a teaching position at their university. He did not try to change his mind about this, but was firm in that he wanted to continue doing expeditions, as he still loved to travel as they had been for the past few years and still felt he was so close to finally getting the scientific breakthrough he had been chasing for his whole career. It pained him that he would have to spend a significant portion of time away from his partner in this arrangement, but felt that this was the sort of sacrifices that one has to make when at this stage in one's career.
Bernard was elated when (SCIENTIFIC LEADER), the chief of scientific staff for the upcoming Enlightenment Expedition, reached out to him to be a part of the team. It could be one last adventure together for him and Bennett, and he managed to convince Bennett to go along with it. Just one more trip to Antarctica and they would get that breakthrough, and they would both be able to put their names on the paper for it. His worries about their relationship quickly faded away; they would be together for the next few years, and anything after that was too far away for him to get worked up over. The two men agreed to (SCIENTIFIC LEADER)'s offer and set off for Antarctica one last time.
