Making and Editing Wikis
My History
So, I'm a big fan of information, whether I'm learning it from somewhere else, or I'm the one sharing my knowledge with others. I especially love obscure and useful facts about games I like, so it should be no surprise that I'm a fan of wikis. I started out, naturally, with making small edits to already existing wikis, like the one for Return of the Obra Dinn. I've also contributed to the wikis for FAITH and The Case of the Golden Idol (though I stopped working on the FAITH one on unpleasant terms, as I disagreed with the main admin about how pages should be written). I eventually stumbled upon a few wikis about things I was really passionate about and interested in, but the wikis themselves were sorely lacking in a lot of important information. I did my best to add to these, and eventually I found myself as an admin for both of them! These wikis were for Ridgeside Village (before it moved to wiki.gg) and Who's Lila?. I did a lot of (I think) great work to improve these wikis but I didn't make them myself, and I thought that would be a fun thing to do eventually. However, since I typically either get invested in really small-scale indie games, or things that are years old and already have wikis, I never really had the opportunity to do so. Until...
The Séance of Blake Manor is a video game that released in October 2025. It's a detective game with horror and historical elements, so it's right up my alley. It also has a lot of depth to it, with lots of characters and lots of small details that players can easily miss during their time playing it. It was the perfect candidate for a wiki, and I played it only a few days after it came out, so no one else had gotten around to making one for it yet. I decided I should be the first, and sent in a request to wiki.gg. It was accepted and within a month the wiki was available for everyone to see! It had a long way to go before being considered complete (and still does), but I was proud of what I managed to do within the time constraint given, and it was really interesting to finally be the one to make a wiki rather than just edit it.
I've continued working on the wiki since then, and in the process have learned a lot about how HTML and CSS work. I always love when a game wiki tries to closely emulate the graphic design and feel of their sources, and I wanted to do that too. It still has a long way to go before I can say it's quite on that level, but I really like what I have managed to do so far. I especially like how the discussions are laid out, as they look very close to how they do in-game. Along the way I also learned some basic Python skills so I could use a tool that would help me automate the creation of some pages (namely the evidence pages, because there are nearly 500 of those), and that was a really fun and illuminating experience.
As I alluded to elsewhere on this website, the process of learning more about HTML and CSS is what got me interested in making my own website. So you've got The Séance of Blake Manor to thank for this place even existing at all! (Say "thank you, Blake Manor!"; I will know if you didn't.) And I think doing things like this has worked out very nicely, things I learned from the wiki have taught me how to do stuff on the website, and vice versa. My brief time with Python also got me thinking more seriously about making my own video games. Maybe not with Python exactly, but it has taught me more about how to "think like a computer", which is useful for any programming language.
Also, I've been thinking that it would be really nice to eventually move the Who's Lila? wiki over to wiki.gg so I don't have to deal with Fandom anymore, and so both of my main wikis are all gathered in one place. BUT, that requires getting a community consensus and rewriting the pages to be better for SEO and I am shy and sort of lazy so I haven't gone forward with that quite yet. Same thing goes for The Case of the Golden Idol, but that may be trickier since I don't think that wiki actually has any admins. Maybe one day!
This is a lower priority task but I think eventually I'll describe some of the neat things I've done with my wikis in detail here, just to show people what is possible with them and to sort of serve as a reminder for my future self of what all this code does, lol. My brain likes to leak important stuff like this, especially if I don't focus on something for a while.
